What changed in the JEE Main syllabus in 2024?

As reported by Careers360 and The Quint, NTA released a revised, reduced syllabus for JEE Main 2024 in early November 2023, aligned with the rationalised NCERT curriculum. According to those reports, the chapters removed included:

  • Mathematics: Mathematical Reasoning and Mathematical Induction
  • Physics: Communication Systems
  • Chemistry: States of Matter, Surface Chemistry, s-Block Elements, Hydrogen, Environmental Chemistry, Polymers and Chemistry in Everyday Life

We could not retrieve NTA’s original 2023 notice, so treat that list as reported. What we can confirm from the official 2026 document is that its unit headings contain no s-Block, Hydrogen, Surface Chemistry, Polymers or Mathematical Reasoning units.

Why this matters if you use older books

Many question banks and coaching modules were written before 2024. If a chapter is not in the list above, it is not a JEE Main unit. Spend that time on the units that are.

What if you are also sitting JEE Advanced?

The JEE Advanced syllabus is not the same. It still lists topics such as Solid State, Surface Chemistry, Hydrogen, s-Block Elements, Environmental Chemistry and Polymers. If you are aiming for the IITs, you cannot rely on the JEE Main list alone.

What is the syllabus for Paper 2A and 2B?

Paper 2A (B.Arch) and Paper 2B (B.Planning) use the same 14 Mathematics units as Paper 1. Both add a Part II Aptitude Test. Paper 2A then has a Part III Drawing Test, and Paper 2B has a Part III Planning section. The official syllabus PDF describes each part.

How to use the syllabus

A unit list is most useful as a checklist:

  1. Mark each unit as not started, learnt, or practised under time.
  2. After every mock test, note which units your wrong answers came from.
  3. Use the chapter-wise PYQs to see how each unit has been asked before.

Our previous-year papers page explains how to review past questions, and the preparation strategy covers how to plan revision across the 54 units. JEE Notes also has a free study plan and formula sheets for every chapter.

TestGuru mock tests cover the full Paper 1 syllabus. After each test the report shows which units and ideas your mistakes came from, so you can see where the gaps are.
