JEE Advanced syllabus: the official topics, and how it differs from JEE Main
The topic headings from the official 2026 brochure, the topics JEE Main does not cover, and free notes for the ground the two exams share.
The official JEE Advanced syllabus is in Annexure-I of the JEE (Advanced) Information Brochure. This page follows the 2026 brochure. The 2027 brochure had not been published as of 9 October 2026.
Unlike JEE Main, JEE Advanced does not use numbered units. It lists topic headings instead. Read the official brochure for the full detail under each heading.
How many topics are in the JEE Advanced syllabus?
| Subject | Topic headings (2026) |
|---|---|
| Physics | 7 |
| Chemistry | 36 |
| Mathematics | 9 |
The numbers are not comparable with JEE Main’s 54 units. Physics has a few broad headings, while Chemistry is split into many narrow ones.
Physics topics
General, Mechanics, Thermal Physics, Electricity and Magnetism, Electromagnetic Waves, Optics, and Modern Physics.
Chemistry topics
- Physical: General topics, Atomic Structure, Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure, Chemical Thermodynamics, Chemical and Ionic Equilibrium, Electrochemistry, Chemical Kinetics, Solid State, Solutions, Surface Chemistry
- Inorganic: Classification of Elements and Periodicity in Properties, Hydrogen, s-Block Elements, p-Block Elements, d-Block Elements, f-Block Elements, Coordination Compounds, Isolation of Metals, Principles of Qualitative Analysis, Environmental Chemistry
- Organic: Basic Principles of Organic Chemistry, Alkanes, Alkenes and Alkynes, Benzene, Phenols, Alkyl Halides, Alcohols, Ethers, Aldehydes and Ketones, Carboxylic Acids, Amines, Haloarenes, Biomolecules, Polymers, Chemistry in Everyday Life, Practical Organic Chemistry
The brochure lists these headings in one sequence. We have grouped them as physical, inorganic and organic to make the list easier to scan.
Mathematics topics
Sets, Relations and Functions; Algebra; Matrices; Probability and Statistics; Trigonometry; Analytical Geometry; Differential Calculus; Integral Calculus; and Vectors.
What is in JEE Advanced but not in JEE Main?
Comparing the 2026 JEE Advanced brochure with NTA’s 2026 JEE Main syllabus, these JEE Advanced topics do not appear as JEE Main units:
- Solid State
- Surface Chemistry
- Hydrogen
- s-Block Elements
- Isolation of Metals
- Environmental Chemistry
- Polymers
- Chemistry in Everyday Life
If you are preparing for both exams, these need separate study. Your JEE Main mock tests and JEE Main question banks will not cover them.
Free notes for the topics JEE Main and Advanced share
Most of the JEE Advanced syllabus overlaps with JEE Main. Our free sister site, JEE Notes, has chapter notes written to the JEE Main unit list. They are a good base for the shared topics, but JEE Advanced can go further, so check each heading against the brochure.
Physics
- Mechanics: Kinematics, Laws of Motion, Work, Energy and Power, Rotational Motion, Gravitation, Properties of Solids and Liquids, Oscillations and Waves
- Thermal Physics: Thermodynamics, Kinetic Theory of Gases

For revision, JEE Notes also has formula sheets for each of these chapters.
How to use the syllabus
Start with the topics JEE Main and JEE Advanced share, because you need them for both exams. Add the Advanced-only topics once those are solid. Our JEE Main syllabus page has the full Main unit list, and the JEE Advanced preparation strategy covers how to plan for both. To see how these topics are examined, look at the official past papers.
