JEE Advanced cutoff: minimum marks for the rank lists
Two cutoffs matter: the JEE Main percentile to get in, and the JEE Advanced marks to get a rank. Here is what the official 2026 documents say about each.
“JEE Advanced cutoff” can mean two different things. This page covers both, using only what the official documents confirm.
- The JEE Main cutoff that lets you register for JEE Advanced.
- The JEE Advanced minimum marks you need to appear on a rank list.
What JEE Main percentile do you need to sit JEE Advanced?
The top 2,50,000 JEE Main Paper 1 candidates qualify. NTA’s 2026 cutoffs were:
| Category | Lowest qualifying NTA score (2026) |
|---|---|
| UR (General) | 93.4123549 |
| Gen-EWS | 82.4164528 |
| OBC-NCL | 80.9232583 |
| SC | 63.9172792 |
| ST | 52.0174712 |
| UR-PwBD | 0.0023186 |
In total, 2,50,182 candidates qualified. The full table, with candidate counts, is on the JEE Main cutoff page.
What marks do you need to get a JEE Advanced rank?
Only candidates who appear in both papers are ranked. Your mark in each subject is your Paper 1 and Paper 2 marks in that subject added together, and your aggregate is the total of the three subjects.
To be included in a rank list, the 2026 brochure required these minimum marks, as a percentage of the maximum:
| Rank list | Minimum in each subject | Minimum aggregate |
|---|---|---|
| Common Rank List (CRL) | 10.0% | 35.0% |
| GEN-EWS / OBC-NCL | 9.0% | 31.5% |
| SC / ST / all PwD lists | 5.0% | 17.5% |
| Preparatory course lists | 2.5% | 8.75% |
The brochure adds that the aggregate minimum “may be lowered subsequently, if required”, under a ministry directive of 13 June 2018.
What were the actual 2026 cutoff marks?
We have not published them here. The official JEE Advanced results portal could not be checked for this page, so we could not verify the final category-wise marks. Check the 2026 results notices on jeeadv.ac.in for the official figures.
What does that mean in marks?
The percentages are of the maximum marks, which change with the pattern. As a straight calculation on the 2026 total of 360 marks (120 per subject), the CRL thresholds work out to 12 marks in each subject and 126 marks in aggregate. Treat that as arithmetic on the brochure’s rule, not as the published 2026 cutoff.
How many candidates qualified in 2026?
According to All India Radio News, reporting the IIT’s announcement on 1 June 2026:
- 1,79,694 candidates appeared in both papers
- 56,880 qualified, of whom 10,107 were female
We could not check these against the official results portal, so we attribute them to the broadcaster.
How are ties broken in JEE Advanced?
The brochure sets this order for candidates with equal aggregate marks:
- Higher positive marks ranks higher.
- If still tied, higher Mathematics marks.
- If still tied, higher Physics marks.
- If still tied, the candidates share the same rank.
The first step means that, between two candidates on the same total, the one who lost fewer marks to negative marking ranks higher.
What comes after the cutoff?
A rank makes you eligible for JoSAA counselling, which began in early June in 2026. For an IIT seat you also need 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC, ST and PwD), or a place in your board’s top 20 percentile. See the eligibility page and the important dates for the full timeline.
