JEE Advanced 2027: exam pattern, syllabus, eligibility and preparation
The IIT entrance, open only to the top JEE Main candidates. Two compulsory papers on one day, and a format that changes from year to year.
JEE Advanced (Joint Entrance Examination, Advanced) decides admission to Bachelor’s, Integrated Master’s and Dual Degree programmes at all the IITs. It is conducted by the seven Zonal Coordinating IITs under the Joint Admission Board (JAB). The organising IIT rotates, and IIT Roorkee organised JEE Advanced 2026.
This guide is based on the JEE (Advanced) 2026 Information Brochure and the 2026 question papers. The 2027 brochure had not been published as of 9 October 2026.

When is JEE Advanced 2027?
Not yet announced. As of 9 October 2026, jeeadv.ac.in had not published the 2027 exam date, the brochure or the organising IIT.
For reference, JEE Advanced 2026 was held on Sunday 17 May 2026, and results came out on 1 June 2026. See important dates for the full 2026 timeline.
Who can take JEE Advanced?
You need to meet all five criteria in the brochure. For 2026 these were:
- A place in the top 2,50,000 of JEE Main 2026 Paper 1 (split by category)
- Born on or after 1 October 2001, with five years’ relaxation for SC, ST and PwD candidates
- At most two attempts, in two consecutive years
- Appeared for Class 12 for the first time in 2025 or 2026, with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics
- Not previously admitted to an IIT
Foreign nationals do not need JEE Main and register directly. Full details are on the eligibility page.
What is the JEE Advanced exam pattern?
JEE Advanced has two papers of three hours each, held on the same day, and both are compulsory. Each paper has sections for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The exam is computer-based, in English and Hindi.
The key thing to know is that the pattern is not fixed. The brochure gives no question counts and says only that negative marks “may be awarded” for some questions. The number of questions, the question types and the marking change from year to year.
Here is what 2026 looked like:
| Paper 1 | Paper 2 | |
|---|---|---|
| Questions per subject | 16 | 18 |
| Marks per subject | 60 | 60 |
| Total | 48 questions, 180 marks | 54 questions, 180 marks |
| Question types | Single-correct MCQ, multiple-correct MCQ, numerical value, matching lists | Single-correct MCQ, multiple-correct MCQ, numerical value, paired numerical questions |
In all, 2026 had 102 questions for 360 marks. Multiple-correct questions awarded partial marks, and numerical questions had no negative marking. The section-by-section breakdown is on the exam pattern page.
How is JEE Advanced different from JEE Main?
| JEE Main (2026) | JEE Advanced (2026) | |
|---|---|---|
| Conducted by | NTA | IITs, under JAB |
| Papers | One (Paper 1), 3 hours | Two, 3 hours each, both compulsory |
| Sittings | Two sessions a year | Once a year |
| Languages | 13 | English and Hindi |
| Question types | MCQ and integer numerical | Several types, changing each year |
| Numerical answers | Integers | Up to two decimal places |
| Ranking | Percentile (NTA score) | Marks |
The syllabus overlaps heavily, but it is not the same. JEE Advanced still lists topics such as Solid State, Surface Chemistry, Hydrogen, s-Block Elements and Polymers, which are not JEE Main units. See the JEE Advanced syllabus.
What do you need to qualify?
You need minimum marks in each subject and in aggregate to appear on a rank list. For the Common Rank List in 2026, the brochure set these at 10% in each subject and 35% aggregate, with lower thresholds for other lists. The cutoff page has the full table.
To take an IIT seat, you also need 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC, ST and PwD), or a place in your board’s category-wise top 20 percentile.
How many students take JEE Advanced?
In 2026, 2,50,182 candidates qualified from JEE Main, according to NTA. According to All India Radio News, 1,79,694 candidates appeared in both papers and 56,880 qualified.
How to prepare for JEE Advanced
Because the format changes each year, the best preparation is deep understanding rather than familiarity with one question style. You also have to get through JEE Main first, and the JEE Main cutoff shows what that took in 2026. Our preparation strategy sets out a plan, and the previous-year papers page shows where to find official past papers.
