Which sections are in XE, XH and XL?
These three papers are built from sections. One section in each is compulsory, and you choose the rest. The marks for each section are on the exam pattern page.
XE Engineering Sciences
Compulsory: XE0 Engineering Mathematics. Then choose any two of:
- XE1 Fluid Mechanics
- XE2 Materials Science
- XE3 Solid Mechanics
- XE4 Thermodynamics
- XE5 Polymer Science and Engineering
- XE6 Food Technology
- XE7 Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences
- XE8 Energy Science
- XE9 Textile Engineering and Fibre Science
XH Humanities and Social Sciences
Compulsory: XH0 Reasoning and Comprehension. Then choose one of:
- XH1 Economics
- XH2 English
- XH3 Linguistics
- XH4 Philosophy
- XH5 Psychology

- XL4 Zoology
- XL5 Food Technology
AR, GE, GG and RA
These papers have a common Part A and then a choice between Part B1 and Part B2. Check the official syllabus for what each part covers in your paper.
What changed in the 2027 papers?
- RA Robotics and Automation is a new paper, so there is no previous GATE cutoff for it.
- Textile Engineering and Fibre Science (TF in 2026) is now section XE9.
- The XE, XH and XL section codes were renamed. For example, XE-A became XE0, XH-B1 became XH0 and XL-P became XL0. If you are using older study material, map the old codes to the new ones.
How to use the syllabus
Print the PDF for your paper and tick off topics as you cover them. If you plan to take two papers, check that your pair is one of the allowed combinations first. The preparation strategy page covers how to plan the months before February, and the important dates page has the exam days.
