GATE 2027 preparation strategy: four months to February
With GATE 2027 starting on 6 February 2027, you have about four months. Here is how to spend them, built around how the paper is actually marked.
GATE 2027 begins on 6 February 2027. As of 9 October 2026, that is about four months away. This plan assumes you have registered, or will do so before the extended window closes on 12 October 2026.
None of this is official advice from IIT Madras. It is a way to use the published pattern to decide where your time goes.
Start with the revised 2027 syllabus
The syllabi were revised for 2027. Before you plan anything, download the PDF for your paper from the official papers and syllabus page and compare it with whatever material you are using. If your notes use old section codes, such as XE-A instead of XE0, map them across. The syllabus page lists every paper and section.
Where are the reliable marks?
General Aptitude: 15 marks in every paper
General Aptitude is the same kind of section whatever paper you take, and it is worth 15 of the 100 marks. It has four parts: verbal, quantitative, analytical and spatial aptitude. Because it does not change with your paper, a few weeks of steady practice usually goes further here than the same time spent on a hard subject topic.
Engineering Mathematics: 13 marks in most engineering papers
In AE, AG, BM, BT, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, ES, IN, ME, MN, MT, NM, PE and PI, Engineering Mathematics carries 13 marks. In XE, the compulsory XE0 Engineering Mathematics section carries 15. Treat it as its own subject, not something you will pick up along the way.
The full marks split is on the exam pattern page.
How should the marking change the way I attempt questions?
GATE has three question types, and they reward different habits.
| Question type | Wrong answer | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| NAT | No penalty | A blank NAT can never beat an attempt. If you have a reasonable working, enter it. |
| MSQ | No penalty, no partial marks | Attempting costs only time. You must select exactly the right set to score. |
| MCQ | −1/3 or −2/3 | A blind guess can cost marks. Guess only after you have ruled options out. |
The mistake to avoid is treating the whole paper as if it had one rule. Candidates who leave NATs blank “because GATE has negative marking” give away marks that could not have hurt them.
A four-month plan
October to December 2026: finish the syllabus
- Work through your paper’s syllabus topic by topic, ticking each one off on the official PDF.
- Do General Aptitude a little at a time every week rather than leaving it to the end.
- After each topic, attempt timed questions in all three formats, MCQ, MSQ and NAT.
January 2027: full papers
- Sit full 3-hour papers in one go, with 65 questions, using an on-screen calculator.
- Check your exam city on 4 January 2027, when allotment is announced.
- After each paper, go through every wrong answer and write down why it went wrong: a concept you had wrong, a misread question, a calculation slip or a rushed guess. Each needs a different fix.
February 2027: the exam window
- Download your admit card as soon as it is released and note your day and session.
- Keep practising in short timed sets, and revise the topics your January papers showed were weak.
Practise on the calculator you will actually use
Physical calculators are banned. You get a virtual on-screen scientific calculator. If you have only ever used a handheld one, the on-screen version will feel slow the first few times, so build it into your full papers early.
Review mistakes by cause, not by score
A total out of 100 tells you how a paper went. It does not tell you what to fix. Sorting your wrong answers by cause, topic by topic, is what turns a practice paper into a plan for the next week.
That is what TestGuru’s reports are built to do: name the idea behind each wrong answer and build a practice set from your own mistakes. TestGuru’s GATE mock tests are not open yet.
