CSIR NET cutoff: minimum benchmarks and how qualifying works
CSIR NET has a minimum benchmark of 33% (25% for SC/ST/PwD), but the real cutoff is set after each exam by subject and category. Here is how it works and where to look for the numbers.
CSIR NET does not have one fixed pass mark. A minimum benchmark gets you into contention, and the real cutoff for your subject and category is decided after each exam. This page explains the rules from section 11.3 of the December 2026 Information Bulletin.
What is the minimum benchmark?
| Category | Minimum benchmark (of total marks) | On a 200-mark paper |
|---|---|---|
| General / EWS / OBC | 33% | 66 marks |
| SC / ST / PwD / PwBD | 25% | 50 marks |
This benchmark applies to JRF, Assistant Professor and Ph.D.-only alike. Reaching it is necessary but not enough. The actual cutoffs are higher.
Is there a separate cutoff for each part?
No. There is no separate cutoff for Parts A, B and C. Merit is based on your cumulative marks across the whole paper. A weak Part A can be made up for in Part C, and the other way round.
How are the actual cutoffs set?
The results committee sets the cutoffs after each exam. They vary by subject and by category, and they can change from one cycle to the next. A score that qualifies in one subject or one cycle may not qualify in another.
Where can I find past CSIR NET cutoffs?
We have not published a cutoff table here. The June 2026 result notices we checked did not include cutoff figures, and we do not publish numbers we cannot trace to an official document.
Results and later notices appear on csirnet.nta.nic.in. CSIR HRDG, which runs the fellowship side, is at csirhrdg.res.in. If an official subject-wise cutoff is released for a cycle, those are the places to find it.
For the December 2026 cycle, the result date has not been announced.
What does this mean for how I prepare?
- Your target is relative. The cutoff depends on how others in your subject and category score, so aim well above 33%.
- Wrong answers cost marks. In most parts, a wrong answer loses 25% of the question’s marks. A careless guess lowers your total, and only the total counts. See the exam pattern page for your subject’s rules.
- Part C carries roughly half the paper, so it does the most to move your total. The preparation strategy page covers how to use that.
For JRF, the age limit also applies. See the eligibility page.
